We are a non-profit
organization that
unites and empowers
Hispanic woman to
become involved in
their communities. SHU
members
are active in
community affairs,
working to raise the
social, economic and
immigration status
of Hispanics
families.
We are
settled in
Silverton, a rural
community 20 miles
west from Salem,
Oregon. As the only
non-profit Hispanic
group within
Silverton / Mount
Angel area our
members are working
to protect and
promote the equality
of women.
Our mission is to
develop within the
Hispanic family the
capacity of
leadership, to
strengthen
interconnections of
leaders in different
Hispanic
organizations, and
to encourage
organizational and
interpersonal
collaboration. SHU main goal is to empower
the Hispanic
community to have a
voice in
institutions that
affect it by
creating
opportunities for
women to develop
their knowledge and
advocacy skills.
Since 2001, our advocacy meetings
and intense work expanded to
Central
Oregon (Madras,
Redmond, Prineville,
Bend) has
awakened the
self-esteem of our
Hispanic women and
their families. The
community and civic
involvement and
participation by
their vote, has
substantially
transformed their
social behavior and
the sense of the way
of how the Hispanic
families has been
seen before.
“If
you educate a
man you
educate a
person, but
if you
educate a
woman, you
educate a
family"
